How to Make a Boat Hat Out of Paper
Are you looking for a unique and fun hat to wear to your next nautical-themed party? If so, then you need to check out this tutorial on how to make a boat hat out of paper! This easy-to-follow guide will show you everything you need to know in order to create this one-of-a-kind headwear.
To start, you will need two sheets of construction paper (we used white and blue), scissors, stapler, and tape. First, cut the blue sheet of paper in half lengthwise. Next, take the two halves and staple them together at the long end to form a cylinder.
Once that is done, cut a 1” strip off of the remaining piece of blue paper and set it aside. Now it’s time to make the sails! On the white sheet of construction paper, draw two triangles (they don’t have to be perfect) and cut them out.
Once you have your sails, use the 1” strip of blue paper that you set aside earlier to create a flagpole for each sail. To do this, simply tape the blue strip vertically onto the backside of each triangle sail. Now that your sails are complete, it’s time to attach them to your boat hat cylinder!
Paper Boat Hat
The Paper Boat Hat is a popular choice for those looking for a summertime accessory that is both stylish and functional. This type of hat is typically made from a lightweight paper material, which makes it ideal for keeping your head cool and protected from the sun during warm weather months. The brim of the hat can vary in width, but is generally wide enough to provide good coverage from the sun.
Many paper boat hats also feature an adjustable strap or tie that helps to keep the hat securely in place on your head.
How to Make a Paper Hat
Assuming you would like a step by step guide on how to make a paper hat:
What You Need:
-A4/Letter sized paper (one sheet per hat)
-Scissors -Glue or Tape -Ruler or Measuring Tape
-Optional: Decorations such as markers, stickers, etc. Instructions: 1. Start with a rectangular piece of paper.
If you are using A4/Letter sized paper, then fold it in half lengthwise so that the long sides meet. Otherwise, cut your paper to be twice as long as it is wide. 2. Once your paper is folded in half lengthwise or cut to size, take the top two corners and bring them together so that the short side meets in the middle and forms a triangle.
The two pointy ends should now be touching each other. Use scissors to trim off any excess paper if necessary so that the edges line up nicely. 3a.
Next, apply glue or tape along the edge where the two points meet (this will be the seam of your hat). Then take one end of the triangle and start rolling it until it reaches the other end and forms a cone shape. Be sure to keep this seam glued/taped down as you roll!
If everything went well, your cone should be able to stand up on its own when finished. OR 3b. Another way to make your cone is by taking one corner of your triangle and folding it diagonally towards the opposite side until it lines up with the edge (as shown below). Once lined up, use scissors to trim off any excess paper at the point where they meet then unfold everything back out into a rectangle again. Now take one of those new corners formed from folding earlier and repeat Step 3a – this time you should have more of a triangular prism shape which will be easier to roll into a cone since two sides are already taped/glued down for you!
How to Make a Hat
Assuming you would like a step-by-step guide on how to make a basic hat:
What You’ll Need:
– 1/2 yard of stiff fabric (felt works well)
– Scissors – Needle and thread or sewing machine – Ruler or measuring tape
– Optional: ribbon, embellishments, etc. Instructions: 1. Cut a rectangle of fabric that is 22″ wide by 10″ tall.
Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise with wrong sides together so it now measures 22″ by 5″. Sew the long side and one short side together with a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving the other short side open. This will be the bottom edge of your hat.
2! With wrong sides still together, fold each raw edge of the top opening inward 1/2″, then another 1/2″. Sew all around the top opening with a close zigzag stitch or serge to finish the raw edges and create a casing for your elastic.
Leave a small opening in the seam so you can thread your elastic through later. 3. Turn your hat right side out and give it a good press.
Using your ruler or measuring tape, find the center front of your hat and mark it with chalk or a pin. Measure 2″ to either side of this point and mark those spots as well – these will be where you insert your dowel rods (or whatever you’re using to shape your brim). 4! To make shaping easier, sew along each marked line with a long running stitch (don’t knot your thread at either end). Gently pull on both threads until they meet in the middle, creating two curved seams. Knot both threads securely at the center point, making sure not to pull too tight or you’ll pucker your fabric. Trim away any excess thread. 5! Find some lightweight dowel rods (or whatever else you want to use to shape your brim) that are slightly longer than the width of your brim opening – mine were about 33″ long total. Insert them into each curved seam until they pop out at the other end – if they’re too long you can always trim them down later. 6! Once both dowel rods are inserted, try shaping your brim into whatever style you like – I made mine fairly shallow but you could go for more of a classic fedora look if you prefer.
How Do You Make a Boat Hat?
Assuming you would like a step-by-step guide on how to make a boat hat:
You will need the following supplies:
-1/2 yard of 44″ wide medium to heavyweight fabric such as denim, canvas, or upholstery fabric
-1/4 yard of 44″ wide lightweight fusible interfacing -Scissors -Pins
-Thread -Chalk or a pencil -A sewing machine
Instructions: 1. Start by cutting out your pattern pieces. You will need two main body pieces and two brim pieces.
To do this, fold your fabric in half widthwise with wrong sides together. Then use a plate or other circular object to trace a large semi-circle onto the folded edge of the fabric. Cut this out, unfold your fabric, and then you should have two identical semi-circle shaped pieces.
Next, trace another circle that is about 4″ smaller than the first one onto one of the semi circles. This will be used for the top part of the hat so that it can sit comfortably on your head. Cut this out as well and then you should have two different sized semi circles – one large and one small. For the brim piece, simply freehand cut a strip of fabric that is about 3″ wide and 44″ long OR measure and cut out a 3×44″ rectangle. Repeat these steps with your interfacing material. 2. Once you have all four pattern pieces cut out – two in fabric and two in interfacing – it’s time to fuse them together.
First, lay down one of your large semi circle body pieces wrong side up on your work surface. Next, take one of your interfacing brim pieces and place it atop the body piece aligning all raw edges (the straight side). There should not be any overhang on either side – if there is trim it off now so that everything lines up nicely when we sew it later on. Once everything is lined up nicely, use a hot iron to fuse the interfacing to the body piece according to package directions being careful not to burn yourself or melt any part of the hat! Do this for both brim pieces making sure they are fused to their coordinating body piece (i.e., don’t accidentally fuse an interfaced brim piece to an unfused body piece!). 3., It’s now time to sew our hat together!
How Do You Make a Boat Cap Out of Paper?
Assuming you would like a step-by-step guide on how to make a paper boat cap:
You will need:
-A4 size paper
-Scissors -Stapler -Tape (optional)
1. fold the paper in half lengthwise and crease well. Open up the paper again so it is flat. 2. Fold each side of the paper towards the center crease, making sure the folds are even.
Once both sides are folded in, fold the entire sheet of paper in half along the original center crease to create a smaller rectangle. Crease well. Unfold back into a flat sheet.
3. Fold each side of the small rectangle towards the center again, meeting in the middle to form an even smaller rectangle/square. Crease well and unfold back into a flat sheet . You should now have 16 equal sections/squares total .
If your folds were not even, evenly trim off any excess with scissors so that all sides are symmetrical . 4 Turn the sheet so that it is landscape/horizontal orientation with the long side running horizontally in front of you . Take two opposite corners and bring them together, folding in half diagonally to meet in the middle and form a triangle shape .
Tape or staple these two corners together if desired – this will help keep your boat cap from losing its shape over time . Repeat with remaining two corners so that all four corners are taped or stapled together at the top to form a point . You have now formed one corner of your boat cap !5 To finish forming your boat cap , simply tuck under any loose flap of paper at bottom edge inside , bringing it up flush against inside wall of triangle (this part will sit atop head when worn ). Your DIY Paper Boat Cap is complete!
